U.S. and Iraq strike urgent security deal as regional war fears grow

Kurdish Policy Analysis – The United States and Iraq have agreed to deepen security coordination and prevent the country from being drawn into escalating regional conflict, following the inaugural meeting of a newly established High Joint Coordination Committee, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said on Thursday.

The committee, created under the long-standing strategic partnership between Baghdad and Washington, met for the first time on March 26, bringing together officials from both sides to strengthen cooperation across political, economic and security fields.

In a joint understanding reached during the meeting, Iraq and the United States agreed to intensify efforts to prevent terrorist attacks and ensure that Iraqi territory is not used as a launchpad for aggression against Iraqi civilians, security forces, or critical infrastructure. The agreement also includes protections for U.S. personnel, diplomatic missions and the international coalition operating in the country.

The two sides underscored their shared objective of keeping Iraq outside the scope of the ongoing regional military tensions, stressing respect for Iraqi sovereignty and the importance of safeguarding its airspace, territory and waters from being used to threaten neighboring states.

Both governments also reaffirmed their commitment to continued counterterrorism cooperation, building on years of joint operations that culminated in the territorial defeat of Islamic State in Iraq.

Officials emphasized that future coordination would prioritize Iraqi-led efforts, aligning with Baghdad’s goal of maintaining stability while reinforcing national sovereignty.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, raising concerns that Iraq could again become a theater for proxy conflict.
