Iraq Becomes Drone War Battlefield as Iran-Backed Militias Strike Gulf States. Five Hundred drone attacks from Iraqi territory hit Saudi Arabia and beyond, raising fears of a hidden regional war spiraling out of control By Dr. Pshtiwan Faraj, SULAIMANI,   Kurdish Policy Analysis , April 21--  Iraqi militia groups close to Iran have fired dozens of drones at Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries during the war; This has created a “silent” war in the midst of the Great War. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, half of the 1,000 drone strikes against Saudi Arabia were from within Iraqi territory. The report cited a Saudi security assessment that said the attacks targeted sensitive positions, including the Yanbu refinery on the Red Sea and oil fields in eastern Saudi Arabia. The report said the drones hit not only Saudi Arabia, but also Kuwait's only civilian airport. Even after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire earlier this...

Secret Islamabad Talks? U.S. and Iran Edge Toward Unthinkable Alliance

A reported meeting between JD Vance and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf could signal the beginning of a historic geopolitical shift.

SULAIMANI, April 8 (Kurdish Policy Analysis) — Senior U.S. and Iranian officials are expected to hold a rare high-level meeting in Pakistan this week, according to sources familiar with the matter, in what could signal a dramatic attempt to reshape relations between Washington and Tehran.

JD Vance is expected to meet Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Islamabad on Thursday, in what would mark one of the most politically sensitive contacts between the two countries in years. Social media reports described the meeting as “exploratory” but potentially significant, coming amid heightened tensions and a fragile regional ceasefire.

A potential strategic pivot

Officials within the administration of Donald Trump believe Ghalibaf could play a key role in opening a new channel with Tehran, the sources said, citing internal deliberations.

“Some in Washington see him as a pragmatic figure they can do business with,” one source said, adding that discussions could focus on de-escalation, regional security, and longer-term strategic alignment.

The idea of Iran evolving into a potential U.S. partner — long considered unthinkable after decades of hostility — reflects the extraordinary fluidity of the current geopolitical moment, analysts say.

“This would represent a historic realignment if it materializes,” said a regional expert. “But the political, ideological and security barriers remain enormous.”

Why Pakistan?

The choice of Pakistan as the venue underscores its growing role as a mediator in regional diplomacy. Officials in Islamabad have in recent days signaled willingness to facilitate dialogue across multiple crisis fronts.

Pakistan’s leadership has also taken an active stance on the current ceasefire, publicly asserting that it should extend across all theaters of conflict.

Skepticism and risks

Despite the optimism expressed by some U.S. officials, there is deep skepticism among analysts and former diplomats about the feasibility of a rapid transformation in U.S.-Iran relations.

Ghalibaf, a former military commander and current parliamentary speaker, is closely tied to Iran’s political establishment, including factions historically opposed to U.S. influence.

“There’s a difference between tactical engagement and strategic alliance,” one former Western diplomat said. “Bridging that gap would require changes far beyond a single meeting.”

No official confirmation

Neither the White House nor Iranian officials have publicly confirmed the meeting.

The lack of official acknowledgment highlights the sensitivity of the contact, particularly at a time when military tensions remain high and trust between the two sides is limited.

Still, even the possibility of such a meeting — if confirmed — suggests that backchannel diplomacy may be accelerating behind the scenes.

As one source put it: “In moments like this, yesterday’s enemy can become tomorrow’s negotiating partner — but that doesn’t mean the path will be smooth.”
