Talks collapse, Iran refuses negotiations, and the countdown to renewed war begins

Posting on his platform Truth Social, Trump said Tehran had failed to uphold the terms of the truce, which is set to expire late Wednesday.
“It’s very unlikely that I’ll extend the ceasefire again. If the time runs out, the bombs will start exploding again,” Trump said, signaling a potential return to military escalation.
He added that U.S. sanctions on Iranian ports would remain in place unless Tehran makes concessions on its nuclear program.
Talks falter as Iran refuses delegation
Diplomatic efforts appeared to stall as Iranian officials confirmed no delegation had been sent to scheduled talks in Islamabad.
Iranian leadership signaled defiance. The country’s parliament speaker said Tehran would not negotiate “under the shadow of threats,” warning that Iran would deploy “new cards on the battlefield” if hostilities resume.
Security in Islamabad has been significantly tightened ahead of the planned talks. Authorities have shifted schools and universities to online learning, while security forces have been deployed around key diplomatic locations and hotels.
Regional tensions remain high
The developments come amid broader instability across the region. A separate 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon remains in place, though tensions persist.
Israeli forces have warned civilians against returning to southern villages, citing alleged violations by Hezbollah. New talks between Israel and Lebanon are expected to take place Thursday in Washington, according to U.S. officials.
Since the start of the wider conflict, at least 2,387 people have been killed, according to official figures, underscoring the human cost of the escalating crisis.

Trump’s latest warning places the region on a knife-edge. With the ceasefire deadline approaching and diplomatic channels faltering, the risk of rapid escalation is rising sharply.
Iran’s refusal to participate in talks suggests a hardening stance, likely aimed at resisting pressure while preserving leverage. At the same time, Washington’s insistence on linking sanctions relief to nuclear concessions leaves little room for immediate compromise.
