The Islamabad meeting marked one of the most significant direct engagements between the two sides in decades, but ended without agreement amid unresolved disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme and access to key maritime routes in the Gulf.
US Vice President JD Vance said Washington’s priority remained a verifiable commitment from Tehran that it would not pursue nuclear weapons, stating that the United States had presented its “final and best offer.”
President Donald Trump later said the talks had produced partial progress but emphasized that the central issue remained unresolved, writing that while “most points were agreed,” the “only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not.”
Trump also announced that the US Navy would begin “blockading any and all ships” attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz, a move that, if fully implemented, would mark a major escalation in maritime enforcement policy.
Iranian officials said the talks collapsed due to what they described as “excessive demands” from Washington, with disputes persisting over nuclear constraints and maritime access. Tehran maintains that it negotiated in “good faith” but faced shifting conditions and mounting pressure.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said “goodwill begets goodwill,” while warning that continued pressure would deepen mistrust and harden positions.
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran had proposed “forward-looking initiatives” but no longer trusted the opposing side.
Despite the breakdown, Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said Islamabad would continue efforts to maintain communication channels between both sides, describing mediation as essential to preventing further escalation.
Analysts cited in regional reporting said the talks, while inconclusive, kept diplomatic channels open at a critical moment, even as military and economic pressure increases in parallel.
The situation remains highly volatile, with maritime tensions in the Gulf and unresolved nuclear disputes threatening to further destabilize an already fragile diplomatic framework.
